re.te is pleased to announce that Francesca and Abdallah have co-authored three chapters in the newly released volume Beyond the 2026 Winter Olympic Games: Sustainable Scenarios for the Valtellina Mountain Region, edited by Andrea Arcidiacono and Stefano Di Vita.
The book provides a critical examination of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, with a particular focus on the Valtellina mountain region. It explores the tensions between sport mega-events and remote mountain areas, addressing both opportunities for regeneration and risks of further socio-spatial disparities in already fragile territories.
The book delve into key issues such as:
- The impact of mass tourism and infrastructure accessibility
- The use of natural resources and climate change challenges
- Contradictions in local demographic trends and land consumption
- The potential for long-term socio-spatial regeneration beyond the Olympic moment
Through a place-based, sustainable development perspective, this work questions whether mega-events can serve as catalysts for meaningful territorial transformation or if they risk reinforcing existing inequalities. By proposing alternative planning and policy strategies, the book offers insights into shaping a lasting legacy for mountain regions beyond 2026.
